Physical properties of Amida
- Polar
- Easily soluble in water due to
the presence of group
C = O
and NH enables
the formation of hydrogen bonds.
- Generally, a solid at room temperature unless: formamide liquid
at TR.
Reparation of amides:
Amides are generally synthesized in the laboratory in several ways:
A. Anhydride reaction with ammonia
B. Ester reaction with ammonia
C. Reaction of acid chlorides with ammonia
D. Heating ammonium carboxylate salts
Amide hydrolysis:
Amida is very strong / resistant to
hydrolysis. But the
presence of concentrated acid or
base, hydrolysis can occur producing carboxylic
acid.
technically a hydrolysis
reaction with water. That's what happens when Amida hydrolyzed with dilute
acid catalyst such
as dilute hydrochloric acid
(HCl). for example in Ethanamida. hydrolysis
reaction to form ethanoic
acid and ammonia ions.
